An index fund is a mutual fund or exchange-traded fund (ETF) designed to follow certain preset rules so that it can replicate the performance ("track") of a specified basket of underlying investments. While index providers often emphasize that they are for-profit organizations, index providers have the ability to act as "reluctant regulators" when determining which companies are suitable for an index. Those rules may include tracking prominent indices like the S&P 500 or the Dow Jones Industrial Average or implementation rules, such as tax-management, tracking error minimization, large block trading or patient/flexible trading strategies that allow for greater tracking error but lower market impact costs. Index funds may also have rules that screen for social and sustainable criteria.

इंडेक्स फंड एक इक्विटी म्यूचुअल फंड होता है जो स्टॉक में निवेश करता है और कई स्टॉक सूचकांक यानि इंडेक्स से मिलकर बनता है जैसे भारत में बीएसई सेंसेक्स या एनएसई निफ्टी। इसके फलस्वरूप इंडेक्स फंड में निवेश के लिए निवेशकों को किसी विशेषज्ञ की सलाह नहीं लेनी पड़ती है। इनके द्वारा मिलने वाला रिटर्न अन्तर्निहित सूचकांक यानि अंडरलाइंग इंडेक्स द्वारा उत्पादित किए जाने वाले फंड से समीपता से जुड़ा होता है। यह फंड किसी विशेष इंडेक्स की सिक्योरिटीज में समान अनुपात में निवेश करता है। इनका का लक्ष्य बीएसई सेंसेक्स या निफ्टी जैसे लोकप्रिय सूचकांक होते हैं। ये फंड किसी विशेष सेक्टर पर आधारित भी हो सकते हैं, जैसे फार्मा, आईटी, एफएमसीजी या ऑटो सेक्टर सूचकांक आदि। इन फंडों से बेंचमार्क इंडेक्स के समान ही रिटर्न मिलने की आशा होती है व इनके जोखिम भी उन सिक्योरिटीज के जोखिम के साथ ही जुड़े होते हैं जिनमें ये निवेश करते हैं। जब बाजार नीचे आते हैं तो उसमें शामिल सिक्योरिटीज के मूल्य में भी गिरावट आती है और इसके साथ ही इंडेक्स फंड भी गिरते हैं।
